Our Guides Include
András Schmidt is a former Secretary of the Hungarian Rarities Committee, the youngest ever. He is fluent in English, knows German and is one of Hungary's most respected birders. Indeed, András is widely regarded as Hungary's most expert field birder and has impressed more visiting birders with his field skills and general manner than modesty permits us to mention. His favourite Hungarian birding areas are the Börzsöny Hills and the Kiskunság plains and his favourite family woodpeckers. András has a particular interest in sound recording.
Gerard Gorman is without question the most experienced bird guide in Hungary, indeed in all Eastern Europe. In fact, most of the Eastern European itineraries published in tour brochures are based upon Gerard's original research. Born in the UK he moved to Hungary in the 1980s and led his first bird tour here in 1987. He has since led around 300 birding tours in the region and no other leader comes close to this figure. He is author of 4 books: A Guide To Birdwatching in Hungary, Where To Watch Birds in Eastern Europe, The Birds of Hungary and the definitive handbook Woodpeckers of Europe. He is also a regular contributor to international birding magazines and journals. His particular interest lies in the Picidae and his favourite birding areas are thus not surprisingly "wooded habitats", indeed Gerard's woodland birding skills are legendary.
Dr. András Kóta is one of the brightest lights in Hungary's new generation of birders. He is a first-class field birder whose favourite birding areas in Hungary include the Danube Bend and Kiskunság region. András is in his late 20s, is a qualified vet and is fluent in English and German. His attentive and diligent style of guiding visitors has made him very popular with visiting birders.
Szabolcs Kókay is widely regarded as Hungary's top bird artist. He was winner of the "British Birds" PJC Bird Illustrator of the Year Award in 2000, gained 2nd place in the BB 2001 overall award, has contributed plates to the "Birdwatch" Artist of Year 2001 Calendar, and is indeed rapidly gaining a reputation outside his native Hungary. Some of his paintings decorate this site. Szabolcs speaks English and lists his favourite birding areas as the Kiskunság, the Bükk Hills and the Danube Bend and his favourite bird families as woodpeckers, owls and shorebirds. His superb colour and black and white artwork illustrate Gerard Gorman's Woodpeckers of Europe.
