budapest birding

Even if one is only visiting Hungary’s scenic capital on a short business or cultural trip, some great birds can still be seen in and around the city.

Our wealth of local knowledge means that at any time of year you can be watching Great Bustard, Saker Falcon, Eastern Imperial and White-tailed Eagles, Pygmy Cormorant, Penduline and Bearded Tits, Short-toed Treecreeper, Hawfinch and many others within an hour of arriving at Budapest airport or having breakfast in a city hotel. Remarkably, seven woodpecker species - Black, Grey-headed, Eurasian Green, Syrian, Great Spotted, Middle Spotted and Lesser Spotted - are resident within the city limits. In spring and summer the likes of Red-footed Falcon, Montagu’s Harrier, White Stork, Ferruginous Duck, Red-crested Pochard, Purple Heron, Mediterranean Gull, Whiskered Tern, Collared Pratincole, European Roller, European Bee-eater, Lesser Grey Shrike, Bluethroat, Collared Flycatcher, River and Savi’s Warblers and more can also be seen. In winter, there are masses of geese, Rough-legged Buzzard, Hen Harrier and Long-eared Owl roosts.

Budapest is the hub of the country with the main international airport, rail connections to many other European cities, and access to all the country’s motorways. We provide a meet and greet service, with pick up and drop off at the airport, riverboat terminals, your hotel or indeed any address in Budapest. Take advantage of our unrivalled expertise and escape from the city for a day or a few hours. Broadleaved forests, limestone hills, grasslands, farmlands, fishponds, lakes and the River Danube and its backwaters and woods, are all within reach.

Whether you have precise bird targets, wish to maximise the number of species you see, or just enjoy a good relaxing day out birding, we are here to help you get the most from your Budapest birding experience.
